The presentation layer provides services to ensure that the information is protected during the transfer process. If a change is required, it is possible to select a compatible transfer syntax based on the application layer syntax. The layer converts character representation formats, which may be necessary to ensure reliable transmission. The voice coding schemes are specified at this layer. Additionally, compression and encryption are possible at this layer.

Communication between applications is controlled by the session layer. Session management is concerned with establishing, managing, and terminating communication connections. Service requests and responses are transmitted between applications on different devices during communication sessions. Specifications that operate at the session layer include Session Control Protocol (SCP), H.245 and H.225. One example of a session layer protocol is Network Basic Input/Output System (NetBIOS).

Data segments in the transport layer are transported in a reliable, transparent manner. As a result, it provides end-to-end error checking and recovery, multiplexing, virtual circuit management, and flow control. Each message is assigned a sequence number at the time of transmission. Upon receipt, the packets are reassembled, errors are checked, and acknowledgement is provided. It ensures that the transmitting device does not send more data than the receiving device can handle.
